ADOPTION  SERVICES

National Adoption Month

You can choose the family for your child . . .

If you make an adoption plan during your pregnancy, or when your child is older, you may choose a prospective adoptive family from profiles that have been prepared. We believe these families will provide a permanent and loving home for your child. They have received adoption education and have a completed home study. Our agency encourages fully open adoptions, but will also work with birth parents who choose confidential placements. Any ongoing contact after placement will depend solely on you and the family of your choice.

Catholic Charities can help you . . .

Catholic Charities is a licensed non-profit child placement agency serving central and western Kansas with offices in Colby, Hays, Manhattan, and Salina.  We provide services to persons regardless of religious preference, age, race or marital status. Our counseling is provided by a licensed social worker. We provide services to birth parents and their families without charge.

Our philosophy . . .

We are advocates first and foremost for the child and birth parents. We believe that children are best served by preserving their connection to their family of origin. We believe that, ideally, every form of adoption centers on meeting the needs of the adoptee. We view adoptive parents as a resource to the birth family.
We believe in you and your ability to make the best decision for you and your child and will support you in whatever decision you make.
We believe that birth families and adoptive families deserve equal respect and that courtesy and services offered to one should also be offered to the other.

You have options . . .

We recognize there is anxiety and uncertainty when you face an unplanned pregnancy or cannot care for your child.
We can help you explore your thoughts and feelings while you consider keeping your child, or placing that child for adoption. Because either choice has life-long implications, it is critical that you carefully consider each option. We invite you to let us know how we can be helpful during this difficult time.

The final decision is yours . . .

The final decision about any adoption plan is yours. Catholic Charities makes sure that there is never any pressure to make a decision.
If you decide to place your child for adoption, we will help you carry out your plan.

STATEMENT OF BELIEFS

We believe every form of adoption must center on meeting the needs of the adoptee.
We believe the first effort in working with pregnant families must be to preserve that family.
We believe that children are best served by preserving their connection to their family of origin.
We view adoptive parents as a resource to the birth family, not vice versa.
We believe that birth families and adoptive families deserve equal respect and that courtesy and services offered to one should also be offered to the other.
We believe that every participant in adoption experiences pain and loss; it is a tragic dimension to adoption and we recognize this theme of loss.
We are committed to protecting the rights of birth fathers and seek their full participation in the open adoption experience.
We recognize that adoption is a lifelong experience and that adoption organizations must remain a resource to our clients through the years.
We believe adoption services must not yield personal or organizational profit.
We recognize that the spirit of candor which characterizes open adoption needs to be applied to adoptions from the past and we actively support open records and the right of adoptees to know their original name.
We believe the commercialization of adoption diminishes the dignity of children.
We believe the vitality of the institution of adoption is directly linked to its’ commitment to candor.
We believe it is the responsibility of the professional to model openness and to create a climate for candor in which client honesty is encouraged and reinforced.
We believe the practice of open adoption is dynamic and continually evolving and are receptive to responsible innovation.
